COVID-19 Comorbidity Data shows Respiratory Diseases, Circulatory Diseases, and Diabetes are top contributors to COVID-19 Deaths

Data from the National Center of Health Statistics (NCHS) was recently published by the Center for Disease Control (CDC) showing the leading comorbidities connected with COVID-19 deaths. The leading comorbidities groups are Respiratory Disease, Circulatory Disease, and Diabetes.

Out of 161,383 total COVID-19 deaths, as of Augus 22, 2020, there were 167,424 respiratory diseases coded on death certificates. The reason the amount of respiratory diseases is greater than the total number of deaths is because some deceased individuals were coded with more than one respiratory disease. The CDC stated that the average COVID-19 death was coded with 2.6 comorbidities. The leading respiratory comorbidity was Influenza and Pneumonia representing 42% of all COVID-19 deaths.

Circulatory diseases represented the second leading category of comorbidities. Nearly 68.3% of all COVID-19 reported deaths were coded with a circulatory disease on the death certificate. Hypertensive disease represented 21.8% of COVID-19 death and cardiac arrest accounted for 12.5%.

Other primary comorbidities coded on death certificated included Diabetes (16%) and Vascular & Unspecified Dementia (11.4%).

Canta Analysis

COVID-19 is not statistically killing Americans. COVID-19 with an underlying and serious medical condition or disease, combined with being 65 years or older, is statistically killing Americans. There is no medical or statistical mystery about this, only political and rhetorical debate.  The data is compelling in that only 6% of all COVID-19 deaths were coded as “COVID-19 only.” The data shows the top pre-existing conditions to be concerned about in combination with COVID -19 mortality rates are as follows:

  • Influenza and Pneumonia 42%
  • Hypertensive Disease  21.8%
  • Diabetes 16%
  • Ischemic heart disease 11.2%
  • Vascular and Unspecified Dementia 11.4%
